Columbus County’s Emergency Services Medical Director may have thought a debate that erupted years ago involving the renewal of his contract was over.
But it’s not.
Columbus County Fire and Rescue Association President Tony Miller will ask the Columbus County Board of commissioners to not only remove Dr. Fred Obrecht from his position but also nurse Liaison Becky Smith.
A letter signed by the association’s Vice President Sara Spivey lists all rescue squads but Whiteville as being in favor of the removal but does not specify why.
Attempts to get in touch with Miller at his home Friday were unsuccessful.
“We wish both Dr. Obrecht and Mrs. Smith well, but believe that Columbus County and its Emergency Medical Service providers will be better served with a change at this time,” the letter reads.
A separate letter bearing Miller’s name requests the item be added to the commissioner’s agenda for Monday night.
“I’m probably headed out but I’m going to tell the truth when I go out,” Obrecht said Sunday (Aug. 19). “I have a rebuttal planned.” (See full story by clicking on title)

he should be fired
October 3rd, 2007 at 8:44 pm
Who ever this person is that stated that Dr. Obrecht should be fired obviously does not quite understand what he has done for this community.I have not seen anyone else stepping up to the bat and letting anyone else in this county work under their medical licence. Maybe, because they don`t want to have these persons who are not willing to get off their behinds and go to a three hour con-ed class or willing to keep up with the growing field of medicine needed to take care of the citizen`s in this community on their unscared licence.Maybe they don`t want to have to face the families of those that did not get up-to-date medical care because most of the ems worker`s in this county had rather spend their time going to fires or four-wheeling with their friends. Most think that “oh, it`s ok,I will just catch the next class or it will come around again”.People need to wake up and smell the coffee. There is not always going to be a next time.No one can guaranty you a tomorrow.Do something today.Stand up and let people know that they have done a bad thing. Dr. Obrecht pushed people to go to con-ed to guaranty the citizen`s of this county a better medical response. He pushed for squads to maintain their certifications and keep them up-to-date. He pushed for a greater community to live in and be proud. He helped people when they would take the time to go talk to him and let him know that they needed help with something. He pushed people for a better education no matter what it was they chose to do.He just wanted all of us to get off our behinds and do good for this county. It`s not too late to bring him back. That`s the right thing to do.Let`s have a medical director that everyone can be proud of.Let`s have a medical director that cares about people not money or showing face.Let`s have a county to be proud of.Let`s bring Dr. Obrecht back.
