Should county taxpayers pay for county employees, such as the county attorney, to attend functions in neighboring counties, which have no relationship to the employees assigned duties? Should tax payers pay for decorating a conference room so it would look good for the county attorney’s visitors?

I think the county attorney needs to keep himself informed of things going on in other counties. It seems that a discretionary fund for community functions in and out of this county is fine, as long as it is not extravagant. Taking a law course, which is required to keep a law license, is perfectly reasonable and most employers would cover that cost. Whether it is taken in SC or NC does not matter, again, as long as it is not extravagant costs. From your article, it did not appear the county attorney is abusing these privileges. Rather, it seems that the News Reporter is trying to make a story where there isn’t one. Columbus County is a poor county, but that doesn’t mean we should expect our county officials or employees to stay in the county at all times. When would they ever learn anything new if that were the case? By the way, the county attorney is not a friend of mine. While, from what I’ve read about him, he obviously was not very qualified for his position, that does not mean he should be subjected to a witch hunt. If he isn’t doing his job, just tell the facts instead of publishing these silly, nitpicky articles. If he ever does leave and they could get someone with lots of experience and qualified for the position, they probably wouldn’t take it after reading these articles in the News Reporter.

What kind of stupid question is that? What other source of funding do you think county government has other than the taxpayer? These 3 or 5 articles in a series are getting ridiculous. Maybe Bob High should go back into retirement if all he has time for is to sit around for weeks at a time reviewing credit card bills. Go fishin’, take a trip, get another hobby - one that does not tear down Columbus County! It is a disgrace for The News Reporter to continue to portray our county in the way it does. That’s why I cancelled my subscription several years ago when Mike Helm started his vendetta. Now Bob and Nicole carry the grudge. Where did it start? Was it the unresolved lawsuit between the newspaper and the county? Local businesses should stop advertising and people should stop reading such trash!

i’m not even sure how to respond to the question. in fact, i’m not sure what the question is. besides this blog not being in real time and half of my comments not being posted, these kinds of questions once again demonstrate how far off the reservation the paper and the politicians its supports are.

“Disgusted” is the typical Bill Memory worshiper and Sammie Jacobs butt kisser. There’s nothing left here in Columbus County but fat old medicaid recipients on disability. Thank God we have a newspaper that will keep it stirred up.
I smell Memory, Jacobs, Norris and McKenzie all over these letters.
How much longer do we have to keep the likes of Varner and Fowler.
I can’t believe Fowler’s answers. What a rube.
I love reading these letters that I am sure have been written by Mr. Vinyl Siding himself.
Hey Bill? Ya gonna run next year? Please do. I want to see what a landslide ouster looks like.
Ya just gotta love these blogs!!!!!!!!!!!

I wrote the first comment and I have NOTHING to do with any of the present commissioners. Just because someone is disgusted with Bob High’s reporting, some people think they are affiliated with the county commissioners? What a joke.
I’m not a fan of Varner or Fowler, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy or condone such childish reporting. It’s like kids in grade school “na na na na na ……Steve Fowler spent your tax money to attend a class in Charleston.” So silly. The News Reporter should cut the yellow journalism if it wants any respect. It has really gone downhill in the past couple of years.

The only thing yellow is the stain left on the taxpayers after the county government gets through with them … and there’s not enough water district water to clean up with.

better to kiss the behind of councilmen who can think on their own than those who can’t think for themselves.
