I have been involved with Columbus County Schools off and on for 50 years, either as a student, teacher or parent of students.
Columbus County has had and still has some fantastically good teachers. We have also had some extremely good administrators…
but as with any school system/business/or group, we have had some who were not so good.
I left one of our small rural high schools for a presteige school in another state, and was one of a very few freshmen placed in an advanced English class. Another classmate was sought out in a class of 200 at UNC and told by a professor with 20+ years espereince that his test paper was the BEST he had ever received…Yes, Columbus County had some good teachers even then.
Teachers in this county, for years, have gone above and beyond for their students. For years the administration offered as much support as possible and let the teachers do their jobs.
We have had school board members who took their jobs seriously and tried to help the teachers do their jobs….and then we have had some who played politics with their positions and hired personel based on geneology and/or politiacal favors owed. Some of these appointees did a great job…and then there have been some?
When funds were tight with the schools, teachers have stepped up and bought their own classroom supplies….this going on for years, and it seemed that the schools began to expect it..and intentionally not purchase enough supplies. Teachers were required to do certain activities, teach certain curriculum and not given needed materials….it is still going on!!!
Yes, teachers question why our Supt. receives enough suppliment to put his salary among the top 10-15 in the state…while the teachers who are often footing the bill for missing supplies get only a 3% suppliment, placing them among the lowest in the state…and our County Commissioners wanted to cut that!!!
There is a lot of waste in our school system. Waste of minds and of money..from the Maintenance Dept.,Administrative offices, schools, and classrooms. Kinda echoes our County as a whole. I think there are too many of us looking at what we want for ourselved and how to profit, ourselves, instead of looking at the big picture, wnich should be, How To Best Serve And Improve The Community (Columbus County).
Sorry, did not mean to get a bit off topic.
I do believe that Columbus County has as many Great Teachers as any other system, if we just give them administrative support and supplies. Give them a chance!!
Most of the teachers are in the classrooms because they care. They have to or they would not stay and take the physical and emotional batterin that they get daily from students, parents and often non-supportive administration.
SUPPORT YOUR SCHOOL!!! gIVE OF YOURSELF, TIME, MONEY, WHATEVER!!!
