Is the N.C. Education Lottery still a worthwhile endeavor despite not providing the level of funding to schools that was predicted?

The Lottery is a “voluntary tax”. If folks want to “tax themselves” … I’m fine with that.

Problem is, as I see it, the NC Lottery was set-up to fail. Frankly, I’m surprized it has done as well as it has… so far.

To answer the original question… no, I don’t think it is helping education in NC. But then, I never thought it would.

  2. Lottery Skeptic Says:

The Lottery is a “poor” tax. Yes it is voluntary, but it preys on people’s hopes and dreams. Why has poor old columbus county bested counties with larger, more well off populations? People will try many things to get to a better life, including gambling. Has it helped education? Well it has provided some additional funds that school systems have not had. In the long run I think it will be used for supplanting.

Gambling is like religion it is best that the government not be involved. What’s next? Education Brothels?

Education has seen some help, but at what price? What are the costs that are difficult to quantify? How many people have purchased lottery tickets instead of baby formula?

how many people buy beer or cigarettes or dirty magazines instead of baby formula? i don’t think the government should be in the business of worrying about how i spend my money.

however, i also think that if gov’t thinks we need to spend another billion dollars on education, they should just come and out and tax us for it. if we disagree, we vote them out. hiding taxes is dishonest.
