I would have no problem with their salaries if I thought they had earned them. It is a tough job under a lot of scrutiny.
While their may be commissioners that are deserving of their compensation, I have to look at them as one entity.
They have not earned their money quite some time.
They should all vote to take a compensation of $1.00 until they reach a set of goals. These goals could be set during a public forum. The goals should be attainable and realistic and include economic/business/employment growth.
This would be a good gesture by their part and show that they do care about the county and not just their personal agendas.
For those getting health insurance, they could continue to receive that benefit if they can show they have no other means of paying for it. After all it takes a heathy commissioner to make healthy decisions.
Columbus County shares a common border with some of the most prosperous counties, and fastest growing counties, in the entire country. And Columbus county… well, if there existed a bread line for destitute counties, Columbus would certainly be in that line.
We need people that have been successful in their business/career life so they don’t need the income from being commissioner for financial support. We don’t need to provide their health insurance while they in office and certain not after they leave office. Please get a life and don’t live off the poor people of Columbus Co. Give us a break—-you don’t deserve what you are taking from the Co budget.
if what you are saying is “we need the wealthy to serve as county commisisoner” I disagree. I think there are plenty of good people with outstanding leadership skills who cannot afford toserve unless there is some incentive. I personally dont see anything wrong with those who are elected being paid for their service. I agree they need to earn it. Some of the commissioners never go to any thing (including stuff in their area) or try to help improve Columbus County. One or two go to meetings and events all over the county and try to help people in all districts. They are the ones who deserve the recognmition, support and salary.
Columbus county is among the poorest of counties in NC..high unemployment, and we have high taxes and some of the highest paid county commissioners…You do the math. Do I think they deserve their high salaries? Not until I see alot more positive results from their service!!!
I think the commissioners should be paid based on job performance and the overall economic health of the county. When things grow, so should their salaries. When things decline, likewise.
first of all, this is a stupid thread. if the newsreporter did its homework they’d realize we’re getting a deal at the rate we’re paying our commissioners and our commissioners are at least honest about it.
most other counties pay a per diem to commissioners for meetings they have to attend and in some cases just for meetings they’ve been invited to. those counties hide their salary by breaking it up. those per diems in most cases add up to heck of a lot more money than 13k a year.
i’m so tired of the newsreporter not doing their research in order to write an article that makes columbus county look bad or just to sell papers.
actually, no. moreover, its sad that you had no other response. are you saying you would rather our elected officials hide how much they receive in compensation in exchange for their service? you’d rather them do the “political” thing and lie to you? sounds to me like you may be the next candidate for the commission.

Now, what was the question… again?

The only time the commssioners’ butt-kissers spit forth is when they can hide behind the anonymity of the internet.
I’m not using my name becasue I don’t want anybody to even know I have the time to do this.
if you all love the commishes so much then publicly praise them. Annoint them. Shower them with money .. oh, wait. We do that now.

Getting a deal? We’re getting a deal.
The Columbus County commissioners won’t be happy until they have raped and pillaged every opportunity this county is offered.
What a pile of crap from Varner on down.
